Plan Contents

Nozawa Onsen 【Applicable Plan No. NZ01–05】

Nozawa Onsen is a hot spring resort long cherished as a healing retreat, boasting abundant water volume and diverse spring qualities. Its signature attraction is the “O-yu Meguri” tour of 13 communal bathhouses, where free access to these outdoor baths also offers the charm of interacting with locals. The hot spring town features cobblestone alleys, souvenir shops, and traditional inns, inviting visitors to enjoy a stroll through its atmospheric streets. In winter, it bustles as a ski resort, making it a hot spring destination offering diverse charms throughout the seasons.

National Treasure: Zenkoji Temple【Plan No. NZ01_NZ02_NZ04】

Zenkō-ji Temple, enshrining the One-Light Trinity Amida Buddha statue said to be Japan's oldest Buddhist image, boasts a history of approximately 1,400 years since its founding. As a temple for the common people, welcoming all without distinction regardless of sect, it attracts numerous visitors from both Japan and abroad.

Togakushi Shrine Chuusha [Plan No. NZ01]

Among the five shrines, this is the Togakushi Shrine Chuusha. Within its grounds stand a sacred tree over 700 years old and three cedar trees each over 800 years old, and it houses the administrative office of Togakushi Shrine.

Ganshoin Temple【Plan No.NZ02_NZ03_NZ04_NZ05 】

This ancient temple is also associated with Sengoku warlord Masanori Fukushima, artist Katsushika Hokusai, and haiku poet Issa Kobayashi. Within the grounds lie Masanori Fukushima's mausoleum and the Frog Battle Pond, where Issa composed the verse: “Skinny frog, don't lose! Issa is here.” The main hall's large chamber features a ceiling painting spanning 21 tatami mats. This is Katsushika Hokusai's late masterpiece, “Great Phoenix.” Completed over 160 years ago in 1848 (the first year of the Kaei era), Hokusai was 89 years old. The “Great Phoenix” painting, with its powerful presence as if actually dancing across the main hall ceiling, is also called the “Phoenix Gazing in All Directions.” Its sharp eyes seem to stare directly at you, no matter where you view it from.

Hokusai Museum【Applicable Plan No. NZ02_NZ03_NZ04_NZ05】

The Katsushika Hokusai Museum.
Established based on original paintings, sketches, and letters created in Obuse, where he spent his later years.
Here, we exhibit one-of-a-kind pieces such as hanging scrolls, folding screens, and original paintings—distinct from the woodblock-printed nishiki-e.
No two works are alike, making this a precious spot where you can feel the very breath of Hokusai's creativity up close.

Takahashi Mayumi Doll Museum【Plan No. NZ01】

This doll museum, featuring the heartwarming original dolls by Iiyama-based artist Mayumi Takahashi, is immensely popular. You'll find yourself captivated by the expression on each one. It's a highly recommended museum worth visiting at least once.

Tanaka Honke Museum【Plan No. NZ03_NZ05】

Founded in the mid-Edo period. The Tanaka Honke family, one of the most prominent merchants in northern Shinano, served as purveyor to the Suzaka domain for generations, their wealth said to surpass even that of the domain itself. The magnificent estate, covering 3,000 tsubo (approx. 9,900 m²) and surrounded by twenty storehouses, still conveys the aura of that era. Inside, a strolling pond garden, guest halls, and the main residence stand side by side, offering delightful strolls throughout the changing seasons.
