Plan Contents

Yudanaka and Shibu Hot Springs Area 【Applicable Plan Nos. SG01–06】

Spanning an altitude of 1,300 to 2,000 meters, this plateau offers year-round enjoyment: fresh greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and skiing in winter, making it a popular resort. The highest point, Yokoteyama (2,307m), is easily accessible via the Sky Liner and lifts, where you can enjoy spectacular views from Japan's highest bakery. Rich wetlands and alpine flora spread across the area, which is also registered as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It also boasts renowned hot springs like Happa Onsen, Kumanoyu Onsen, Shibutoge Onsen, and Kidoike Onsen, offering relaxation for both body and mind when combined with lodging.

National Treasure: Zenkoji Temple【Applicable Plan No. SG02_SG05】

Zenkōji Temple, enshrining the One-Light Trinity Amida Buddha statue said to be Japan's oldest Buddhist image, boasts a history of approximately 1,400 years since its founding. As a temple for the common people, welcoming all without distinction regardless of sect, it attracts numerous visitors from both Japan and abroad.

Togakushi Shrine Chuusha【Applicable Plan No. SG01_SG04 】

Among the five shrines, this is the Togakushi Shrine Chuusha. Within its grounds stand a sacred tree over 700 years old and three cedar trees each over 800 years old, and it houses the administrative office of Togakushi Shrine.

Kagami Pond【Applicable Plan No.SG01_SG04 】

The landscape, reflecting the Togakushi mountain range like a mirror, is truly spectacular.

Ganshoin Temple【Applicable Plan No.SG03_SG06 】

This ancient temple is also associated with Sengoku warlord Masanori Fukushima, artist Katsushika Hokusai, and haiku poet Issa Kobayashi. Within the grounds lie Masanori Fukushima's mausoleum and the Frog Battle Pond, where Issa composed the verse: “Skinny frog, don't lose! Issa is here.” The main hall's large chamber features a 21-mat ceiling painting. This is Katsushika Hokusai's late masterpiece, “Great Phoenix.” Completed over 160 years ago in 1848 (the first year of the Kaei era), Hokusai was 89 years old. The powerful “Great Phoenix” seems to dance across the main hall's ceiling. Also known as the Phoenix Gazing in All Directions, its sharp eyes seem to stare directly at you, no matter where you stand.

Hokusai Museum【Applicable Plan No.SG03_SG06 】

The Katsushika Hokusai Museum.
Established based on original paintings, sketches, and letters created in Obuse, where he spent his later years.
Here, we exhibit one-of-a-kind pieces such as hanging scrolls, folding screens, and original paintings—distinct from the woodblock-printed nishiki-e.
No two works are alike, making this a precious spot where you can feel the very breath of Hokusai's creativity up close.

Zōzan Shrine【Applicable Plan No.SG02_SG05】

In 1913 (Taisho 2), coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Shozan's martyrdom, plans for establishing a shrine were initiated, spearheaded by Chief Justice Yokota Hideo, a native of Matsushiro Town. The shrine was founded in 1938 (Showa 13). The shrine site occupies the former residence of Sakuma Shozan. Buildings associated with Shozan have been relocated to the shrine grounds from within Matsushiro Town and from Kyoto. Note that while Sakuma Shozan's name is generally read as “Shozan,” it is traditionally pronounced ‘Zozan’ in his native Nagano Prefecture. Following this local custom, the shrine's name is also read as “Zozan Shrine.”

Former Sanada Residence【Applicable Plan No.SG02_SG05】

This outer palace was built in 1864 (the first year of the Genji era) by Sanada Yukinori, the ninth lord of the Matsushiro Domain, as a residence for his mother-in-law, Teimatsu-in (the wife of Yukiyoshi). It was apparently called the “New Palace” at the time.
