Participate in the annual ritual and learn about Shouganji’s history and its Kannon statues through engaging storytelling. This traditional method, which originated in India and traveled through Asia to Japan, uses artwork to convey teachings and stories. Kan’e Takesawa’s skilled narration is sure to captivate you.

❷ Special Viewing of Kannon Hall
Enjoy exclusive access to Shouganji’s Kannon Hall, a Nagano City-designated tangible cultural property. Admire 121 unique Kannon statues up close, including the powerful Batou Kannon, said to destroy doubts and repel negativity.

❸ “Fuku wa Uchi!” Bean-Throwing Ritual
Join the traditional bean-throwing ritual, unique to Oni-no-Sato, where there are no demons to expel. Instead of “Oni wa Soto,” shout “Fuku wa Uchi!” to invite good fortune and start the new year with a smile.

Ryouunzan Shouganji

A Nagano City-designated tangible cultural property housing 121 Kannon statues representing seven types: Shou Kannon, Juichimen Kannon, Senju Kannon, Fukuu Basoku Kannon, Nyoirin Kannon, Juntei Kannon, and Batou Kannon.

An immersive storytelling session of the ‘Six Realms of Hell and the Ten Kings’ illustrated journey, presented by Kan’e Takesawa from Karukayasan Saikouji Temple.

Learn about the Buddhist world in an engaging way through the ‘Six Realms of Hell’ painting, depicting the afterlife, and the ‘Ten Kings,’ who judge us after death. Kan’e Takesawa’s witty storytelling, combined with the powerful and vivid artwork, is sure to captivate you!

The chant is ‘Fuku wa Uchi!’ (Good fortune inside!)

Everyone participates in the bean-throwing ritual. Since there are no demons in Kinasa, the chant is only ‘Fuku wa Uchi!’ (Good fortune inside!). Invite good fortune and welcome the new year with a smile. After Risshun (the beginning of spring), 2025 officially begins. Let’s make it a bright, joyful, and prosperous year!
